Bio
Born in Paris in March 1956, Philippe Sarrey discovered photograpy around the age of 15 when his uncle offered him his first camera, an Ultraflex 6x9.
“It was a revelation to be able to capture for eternity a short instant on a film.”
“The fascination exerted by seeing an image revealing itself under the non-actinic light of a lab still happens 35 years after; it’s still with a feverish hand that I discover a film after development.”
He becomes an assistant and learns the techniques in several studios.
“I have worked just about on every subject: portraits, fashion, industry, musical instruments, etc… ilt’s like an initiation course, to learn a technique to forget it just after, to master it without becoming enslaved to it. Imagination and research come together in parallel. An image must exist in its frame as well as having to suffice by itself. After several years; my work had become like a logbook, with all my moods, my joys and my pains, that may sound derogatory but it’s the truth."
His photographic influences are many and diverse. “To be photographic artist is to find and possess your own style. Any resemblance is to banish, under penalty of being no one.
